2019 National Environmental Literacy Survey Project

In order to understand the environmental literacy of the people in Taiwan, the Environmental Protection Administration commissioned to conduct the "2019 Environmental Literacy Survey". The survey subjects were divided into groups of people (including public sector, private sector, and other people), teachers group (including kindergarten, elementary school, junior high school, high school (vocational) to college teachers) and student group (including elementary school, junior high school, high school (vocational) to colleges & universities). The questionnaire was divided into 3 main dimensions of knowledge, attitude and behavior, each of which has been including 3 sub-dimensions, for a total of 9 sub-dimensions. This project was taken by the stratified random sampling. This project was carried out to survey from February to April, 2020. There were including 6,385 valid samples in the student group, 5,417 valid samples in the teacher group, 1,659 valid samples in the public sector group, and 5,688 valid samples in the private sector and other people. A valid sample, within 95% confidence level, the sampling error of each group was detected within ±3% The survey results have shown that the scores of the student group on environmental knowledge, attitudes and behaviors were detected between 68.6-85.8 points; the teacher group scores were detected between 74.1-88.7 points; the public sector scores were detected between 76.6-85.1 points; the private sector scores were detected between 63.4 and 86.6; the rest of other people scores were detected between 50 and 64.6. This plan has provided six suggestions in the follows: (1) Guiding students to take environmental actions through clubs or outdoor learning activities. (2) The publicity measures for students' environmental literacy can be presented in a graphical way. (3) Encouraging teachers to share environmental education resources and increasing access toward better environmental knowledge. (4) Deepening community environmental education, combining volunteers associated with social media to improve the environmental literacy of the general public. (5) Combining corporate social responsibility (CSR) to deepen environmental education in the private sectors. (6) Enhancing parent-child or grandparent-grandchild relationships, the younger generation will return feedback about their environmental knowledge toward elder generation.
